the far away doll

by Nadia • 22 05 2025

it’s very far away. you’ve never seen its face. how can you long for a doll you’ve never seen?

you’re a doll and it’s a doll and it’s very far away.

you are the only doll in your neighborhood. you see other dolls when your witch takes you to the city. you sit politely, in silence, stealing glances between sips of tea as your witches catch up with one another. could this be the doll who’s far away? the doll you met online?

because you don’t really know where it lives. it might not be so far, it keeps similar hours to you, after all. the odds are low but it could be in the city.

you’ve spoken to it online. in an online community where dolls gather. you’ve never seen its face. you’ve heard its voice, though. if you can get the doll across from you to just say something, then you’d know. but its mind has wandered while you were contemplating. it’s sitting in stillness…you don’t think this can be the far away doll. the world is not so small. if it were the far away doll, wouldn’t it be looking for you too? wouldn’t it be searching your eyes for a sign?

you wish you were home now so you could catch up with the far away doll. will it be waiting for you when you log on?

the far away doll has its own witch, presumably, its own purpose, just like you, keeping it rooted in its proper place, as are you. so you never ask where it is, how far it is, if it’s possible to meet. how can you long for a doll you’ve never seen? but you imagine it near you in the darkness, its brittle fingers curling around your soft ones. you imagine its cool cheek next to yours, brown ringlets tickling your neck. “this one will never let go” you imagine it whispering as its hands fall to your shoulders, pulling you in, and you fall down to the bed, your dresses mingling, cotton and satin. suddenly on top of it, your lips press against its mouth, and between your soft knees you feel… you think you feel…

your witch is standing up, the sound of her chair scraping against the cafe floor. she asks if you’re finished with your tea. it’s time to go.

it’s very far away. you’ve finished your tea. you thank the witch and the other doll for meeting, and curtsey.

you’ve never seen its face. the other doll curtseys in return, silently, and walks away with its witch.

you’re a doll and it’s a doll. how can you long for a doll you’ve never seen?
